"This semester, the seminar focuses on the concept of urban squares, aiming to explore their defining characteristics and structural order as vital urban elements. Through comparative analysis, urban layouts of international reference sites will be examined alongside local sites in Hamburg. Initial analysis and lectures will reflect on the relationship between architectural typology and city morphology, focusing on architecture defining squares and the boundary between public and private spaces. The second phase will translate findings into urban design approaches through plan and model studies."

The Concept The approximately 5,000-square-meter square is surrounded by shops in the historic city center and is intended to serve as a "Green Oasis," providing a peaceful retreat amid the city bustle. During our research, however, we found it was mostly used as a passageway, with limited seating options encouraging short stays. The design aims to boost the square's appeal while preserving its function as a relaxation spot. An amphitheater, inspired by Hauptmann and the nearby Thalia Theater, is integrated to support occasional performances. The organic shape reflects the area's distinctive ground undulations and seamlessly blends into the "Green Oasis" concept with a wooden structure. We also considered events like the Christmas market, ensuring that the new seating, some of which is covered, can be easily incorporated into such occasions.
